A broken translational symmetry state in an infinite-layer nickelate

A defining signature of strongly correlated electronic systems is the existence competing phases with similar ground state energies, resulting in a rich phase diagram. While recently discovered nickelate superconductors, high antiferromagnetic exchange energy has been reported, which implies strong correlations, signatures have not yet observed. Here, we uncover charge order (CO) infinite-layer nickelates La1-xSrxNiO2 using resonant x-ray scattering across Ni L-edge. In parent compound, CO arranges along Ni-O bond direction an incommensurate wave vector (0.344+/-0.002, 0) r.l.u., distinct from stripe other propagates 45 degree to bond. The resonance profile indicates that originates 3d states and induces parasitic modulation La electrons. Upon doping, diminishes ordering shifts toward commensurate value 1/3 indicating likely arises correlation effects Fermi surface nesting.
